Suzanne Woods Fisher is one of my favorite authors. I will read any book she writes. Her Amish fiction series are outstanding. In this latest book, she writes about a different time period and people. The setting goes back and forth between the 1600’s-1700’s, and the story centers around the Quakers in Nantucket.

Phoebe and Mary are two Nantucket ladies who live almost a century apart.  Phoebe receives Mary’s diary as a gift from her father. The diary is a much-coveted heirloom in their family and Phoebe seems the most unlikely one chosen in her generation to receive it.  As Phoebe goes through her perplexing struggles, she reads Mary’s diary for encouragement and hope.  The storyline takes some unexpected twists and turns, and all throughout the book, the diary becomes an important source of help for Phoebe’s dire situation.

As far as the characters go, I found it difficult to connect with Phoebe and found parts of her story tiresome.  However, I very much enjoyed the excepts from Mary’s diary and found her to be a woman of strong, feisty character.  Mary’s story made the book worth reading and will be continued in the next book of the series.  I’m very much interested in reading more of Mary’s journal.

I did receive an advanced copy from the publisher, and I was not required to give a positive review.  This is my honest opinion about this book.
