Review of “How to be a Perfect Christian” by The Babylon Bee

Book description from Amazon.com:

“With a biting, satirical style reminiscent of The Onion, How to Be a Perfect Christian takes a humorous look at the quirks of cultural Christianity while subtly challenging the reader to search for more than a cultural faith.

Written in the trademark style of The Babylon Bee, this book humorously satirizes cultural Christianity while peppering in subtle challenges to the reader. Through humor and sarcasm (and a handy meter to rank your “holiness” as you progress through the book), readers will be called to find a more biblical understanding of the Christian faith, all while poking fun at the quirks of the modern, American Christian community.”

My Review:

Before you read this review:  This book is NOT for everyone.  Some of you do not enjoy satire, even well-intentioned satire, and that’s ok.  I’m usually in that camp, too.  But I made an exception for this book.  If you hate satire, don’t unfollow me.  This may be the only book like this I’ll ever review.  So here goes:

Don’t even dare pick up this book unless your sense of humor is completely intact and ready to be activated as you read. Make sure that your sarcasm meter is in top working order. Expect to find yourself alternating between laughing hysterically or groaning very loudly. Also expect your toes to get stepped on when the writers zero in on your favorite Christian culture “thing”, because they left no one out in this book. One thing’s for sure: As you read this book, you’ll began to realize the exhaustion that comes if you do all that is required to become “the perfect Christian ” through the eyes of “Christian culture”.

Here’s an insider’s tip on reading this book: Read it to the end. That way, when you finally get to page 191, everything about the book falls into it’s proper place. You may even find yourself smiling and possibly having a heart filled with gratitude for your Savior. Bravo, Babylon Bee, for making the point with such humor and fun along the way.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my own
