Review of “Underestimating Miss Cecilia” by Carolyn Miller

Publisher Description

“Shy, sweet Cecilia Hatherleigh has always been in love with Edward Amherst, the boy next door. Yet he’s never seen her as anything but the quiet girl in the background as he flirts with the other vivacious women of the ton. When a near tragedy brings Edward’s attention to his family duties, this prodigal son decides he needs to settle down with a proper wife. Cecilia hopes to convince him to choose her—but God may want her to forget the wayward nobleman and put her future in His hands alone. These two try to find their way toward happiness, but prejudice, political riots, and the changing face of England’s societal structures begin to block them at every turn. Can their struggles turn to triumph—or will their paths permanently diverge?”

My Review:

I have always enjoyed reading Regency fiction, but it’s been a struggle at times finding clean, sweet Regency books that are also well-written.  I was delighted when I was introduced to Carolyn Miller’s books.  Her books are filled with the details of the Regency era that we all love.  The storylines are always interesting.  When I get one of her books, I always try to find a time when I can read uninterrupted because I become so involved in the story.  But the thing I love most of about her books is the “faith” aspect of her stories.  She does an excellent job of weaving Biblical truth into her stories in a gracious way.

In this particular book, the author has woven the themes of trust, forgiveness and redemption in the stories of Ned and Cecilia.  Ned had been the “prodigal son”, but had turned to God and returned to his family. He knows God has forgiven him, but he’s struggling with his mistakes of the past.  Cecilia has struggled with confidence and insecurity and has felt somewhat forgotten as the middle sister of the three Ansley daughters.  She has loved Ned for many years, but he has never seen her as anything but the girl next door.  But they soon find their relationship changing.  Their romance is a tender one and it takes much faith and trust on both their parts to find their happily-ever-after.

If you love Regency stories, I highly recommend this book to you.  Even though this is the second book in the series, you do not have to had read the first book to enjoy this one.  This is a beautiful series, and I’m looking forward to next reading Verity’s story.  She’s the youngest of the sisters, and I think her story will be a fun one.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Inspirational romance with heart, hope, and a twist of Aussie humor
