Review of “Marry Me, Millie” by Amy Lillard

PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION

Amy Lillard’s uplifting new series unites a “Widows Club” of women who share solace, friendship, and faith in the Amish community of Paradise Valley, Missouri . . . When her young husband died unexpectedly, Millie Bauman thought her life was over too—until she learned she was carrying his child. Now, as she awaits the baby’s arrival, Millie’s sure her future will revolve around motherhood, the B&B she runs with her Aunt Sylvie, and the beloved Whoopie Pies her Widows Club whips up each week. But when a handsome newcomer arrives in town, Millie is intrigued, and the club wonders if Millie might find a second chance at love . . .

Henry King plans to stay in Paradise Valley long enough to take care of some family business, and hopefully mend the heartache of his own lost love. As Henry and Millie cross paths, it’s clear their neighbors are gently trying to play matchmaker. Not wanting to disappoint, the two pretend to play along—but life gets complicated when a true and tender affection grows. As Millie gets ready to welcome her baby, they must rely on faith and fate to decide if they should risk their hearts on love again

. . . “Lovely . . . Lillard does an excellent job of depicting with accuracy and compassion the difficulties faced by those with mental disabilities. This affecting tale will surely inspire.”—Publishers Weekly on Loving Jenna (Starred Review)

My Review:
This is a sweet story with interesting characters and a storyline that’s full of faith; hope; and second chances.

Millie Bauman lost her husband in a tragic accident.  She’s pregnant with their  first child, and she’s beginning life again by helping her aunt run her B & B in Paradise Valley, Missouri.  Henry King’s engagement ended unexpectedly, and he’s moved to Paradise Valley to help his grandfather and also for his broken heart to heal.  When Millie and Henry meet at church, there’s a tiny spark between them, but both quickly turn away since they’ve each turned their back on love.  It’s the perfect time for some matchmaking, and the members of the “Whoopie Pies Widows Club” are always ready to lend a hand and help a deserving couple find their happily ever after.

I truly loved this book and the Paradise Valley community.  There’s a secondary romance between two members of the “older” generation, Sylvie and Vern, that’s as interesting as the romance between Millie and Henry. There’s also the excitement of the bake-off at the town’s festival to determine the winner of the “whoopie pie” competition, and the hope that Sylvie can retain her crown from last year.  All of this combines to make a wonderful beginning to a new series set in Paradise Valley, Missouri.  I’m eagerly looking forward to the next book and learning more about the ladies in the “Whoopie Pies Widows Club”.
