Review of ”Summerhaven” by TiffanyOdekirk

PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION

Hannah Kent and Oliver Jennings pledged their hearts to each other as children. Now, years later, Hannah is thrilled to receive an invitation to spend the summer at Oliver’s family’s country estate. The path to wedded bliss is clear—so long as Oliver’s highbrow older brother, Damon, has ceased his juvenile antics, Hannah’s future looks bright indeed.

But from the moment Hannah arrives at Summerhaven, nothing is as she expected. Oliver seems disinterested in renewing their acquaintance, and Damon is not the brutish boy she remembers but a man intent on avoiding marriage. Although she has loathed Damon her whole life, when he contrives a ruse designed to win them both what they desire, Hannah warily agrees. All she has to do to reclaim Oliver’s attention is pretend to be madly in love with Damon. But when Damon is surprisingly convincing in his role as a suitor, it proves difficult to discern the line between pretense and true love.

My Review:
This compelling story represents the very best of clean Regency fiction.  I love this author’s writing style which flows smoothly.  The beautiful descriptions of the estate of Summerhaven made me feel as if I could walk the paths in the English flower garden on the estate.  Her historical details as far as the dress and society of that day are accurate and gave the story an authentic feel.  I also always appreciate when reading Regency story where the dialogue fits the time period and nothing “modern” slips into the conversations.

However, this book is more than just well-written and researched.  The storyline grabbed my attention from the beginning.  Hannah Kent is the daughter of an English gentleman who pastors a congregation in London.  After eight years away, she’s again returning to the grand estate of Summerhaven where she spent many summers of her childhood.  She’s especially again looking forward to seeing Oliver Jennings, the second son of the family, as Hannah has considered herself engaged to him for many years.  But things aren’t exactly as Hannah remembers, and her summer there will turn out to be far more different than she ever thought it could be. As Hannah’s childhood dreams fade away, new ones surface to take their place, and Hannah must search her heart to discover what future holds.

Hannah is wonderful main character for this book.  We see the whole story from her viewpoint, and the author makes sure that we get to know her very well.  Hannah’s kind heart and care for others turns this book into more than just a love story.  There were times that I thought the conflict between the brothers went just a bit too long, but in the end, I found I had enjoyed reading every page of this book.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher.  All opinions are my own.
