Review of “Coming Home” by Shelley Shepard Gray

PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION

When an army vet becomes a firefighter in small-town Colorado, the flames of an old love reignite in this sweet romance by bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray.

“In Woodland Park, a small town nestled in the foothills of Pikes Peak, Anderson Kelly and Chelsea Davis were once the high school “it” couple—the star quarterback and the valedictorian. They broke up when Anderson joined the army and one poor decision at a fraternity party changed Chelsea’s life. Now, she works long shifts in a senior center to support her nine-year-old son, Jack.

After multiple tours in Afghanistan, Anderson has changed, too—physically scarred but mentally strong—and he decides to move back to Woodland Park. Anderson and Chelsea steer clear of each other to avoid reopening old wounds, until they are forced to reconnect through the senior center. They soon discover that the love they once shared never completely vanished. But it will take a fire, a dangerous collision, and the love of one little boy to help Anderson and Chelsea see that the future they’ve always yearned for is in sight.”

My Review:

This is another heart-touching story from a wonderful author.  From the very first pages of this book, I was drawn into the story of Anderson Kelly and Chelsea Davis.  Although their high school romance was interrupted when Anderson joined the army, their feelings for each other had never completely died away.  In the years since they had seen each other, both had quite a bit to overcome.  Anderson had found a way to overcome his injuries received during his service and had returned to Woodland Park to become a lead firefighter.  Chelsea had made a bad decision, and as a result, found herself a single mom raising her nine year old son, Jack.  The author did a wonderful job of allowing us to understand the characters and the mixture of fear, courage, trust, and faith that characterized their lives.  Both had much to go through to grow closer to each other again, and by the end of the book, I was cheering for them to find their happily-ever-after together.

While I wouldn’t classify this book as Christian fiction, it is a sweet, clean story with just a small touch of faith added into the storyline.  I enjoyed this story, and I’m looking forward to reading more in this series.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher.  All opinions are my own.
