Seattle marketing specialist Summer Connelly welcomes the assignment to supervise the construction of a company float for the annual 4th of July parade in Friday Harbor, WA. Not only will it be a chance to prove her leadership skills to her boss, but an opportunity for a much-needed escape, especially since she hasn’t taken any time off since her divorce was finalized over a year ago.

Ace Lockhart works himself to the bone at his Portland contracting company, but something in his life feels off. When doctors tell him his elderly father has taken a turn for the worse, he heads to Friday Harbor to be with the old man, simply because no one else in the family will even speak to him.

As fate would have it, Summer’s plans for the parade look like they could go up in smoke before any fireworks are even set off. Can Ace be the ticket to light at the end of the tunnel? Will their days together lead to fireworks in more ways than one?

My Review:

Recovering from a divorce that she never wanted, Summer Connelly has thrown herself into her job and worked harder than ever before. Recognizing that Summer needs a restart on her life and a time to renew, her boss sends her to Friday Harbor to help create a float for one of their clients. Summer finds herself looking forward to the change and she’s anticipating the change of pace. Ace Lockhart is staying in Friday Harbor to be near his dad who is seriously ill. As the two meet, Summer realizes that Ace can be an a much-needed resource for the creation of the float; and Ace realizes that Summer can be a support to him as he cares for his dad. As the two work together, they find that this temporary situation might lead to something more permanent between the two of them.

This interesting and sweet story isn’t lengthy. (The book is novella length at 131 pages.) The setting of the story was beautiful and added to my interest in the book. Because of the length of the book, there’s not deep character development, but I enjoyed reading Summer and Ace’s story. There’s a thread of faith in Summer’s story that’s heart-touching and reminds us that people around us are searching for hope and peace. This is a nice book for those times that you want something uplifting and shorter to read.
