Book review of “Foremost” by Jody Hedlund

“Raised in an isolated abbey, Lady Maribel desires nothing more than to become a nun and continue practicing her healing arts. She’s carefree and happy with her life…until a visitor comes to the abbey and reveals her true identity as one of the lost princesses.

When he was a young boy, Edmund Chambers helplessly watched King Ethelwulf murder his family. Edmund escaped and has lived in the abbey ever since, uniquely trained to work with wild animals. Secretly, he loves Maribel and desperately hopes she doesn’t complete her holy order vows.

When King Ethelwulf’s army arrives at the abbey to capture Maribel, she flees with Edmund across the desolate Highlands in an attempt to reach Adelaide’s rebel army. Edmund can no longer hide his love, but can Maribel give up her dreams of becoming a nun to love him in return?”

My Review:

I am enjoying this new YA series by Jody Hedlund.  These stories are suspenseful and full of adventure with just the right touch of clean romance.

It will help your enjoyment of this story if you’ve read the short prequel “Always” and the first book in the series, “Evermore”.

This book features Maribel, the second of the “lost princesses”.  Maribel is strong-willed, loyal, and compassionate.  She is also a skilled and knowledgeable healer, and considers healing her life’s work.  But all of that changes when Maribel discovers her true identity as a princess, and she must make her escape and find her older sister, Queen Adelaide.  She is protected on her search by her childhood friend, Edmund.  As Maribel realizes that her destiny may be completely different than anything she could have imagined, she also begins to realize that her relationship with Edmund is changing, too.  Edmund is all that a princess could wish for as a hero, and their love story is a sweet one.

This series has a “fairy tale” touch that will appeal to readers of all ages.  The themes of loyalty, compassion, and love run all throughout the storyline.  There’s one more princess yet to reunite with the two sisters. Emmeline is in more danger than she can imagine, and I’m looking forward to reading her story.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher.  All opinions are my own.
