Review of “Fading Into The Night” by Vannetta Chapman

Book description:

When a cyber terrorist targets the Amish town of Shipshewana, an Amish farmer and a seasoned agent join forces to stop the attack.

How do you defend yourself against an attack you can’t see?

Nora Brooks has been sent to the small town of Shipshewana to stop a cyber-attack that could kill hundreds. She doesn’t realize that she’ll need an Amish farmer to do so. Ben Lapp is walking around the corner of his barn when he comes face to face with a woman dressed in black, bleeding from a wound on her right arm, and aiming a gun at him. When he learns why she’s there, he wants to do more than stay out of her way. He wants to help her stop this threat to the community and the people that he loves. But the man who is threatening Ben’s community has faded into the night, and it’s going to take every bit of cunning and instinct these two possess to find and stop him.

My Review:

A note before I begin this review:  This novella first appeared in a collection of stories entitled “Summer of Suspense”.  If you have that book, you have this story.

Vannetta Chapman writes amazing mystery/suspense stories.  I also love her Amish books.  This one combines both genres in a storyline that seems as if it could be right out of today’s headlines.  This story has a “race against the clock” feel to it, and as I kept reading, I felt the tension grow all through the story.  Although this book is shorter in length, it lacks nothing as far as plot or character development.  Even reading it for a second time helped me pick up details that I missed the first time as I was reading quickly to get to the end of the story.

I also loved the characters of Ben and Nora. Ben’s an Amish farmer; Nora’s a seasoned Federal investigator.  They come together in a most unexpected way in an unexpected place—the small Amish community of Shipshewana, Indiana.  It will take the two of them working together to stop the beginning of a cyber plot that could affect thousands of people.  Their differences in background adds much interest to the plot of this story.

I’m hoping that the author will bring these two characters together again in a another book.  I loved this “Cyber Division” story.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher.  All opinions are my own.
