Review of “Storing Up Trouble” by Jen Turano

Publisher Description:

When Miss Beatrix Waterbury’s Chicago-bound train ride is interrupted by a heist, Mr. Norman Nesbit, a man of science who believes his research was the target of the heist, comes to her aid. Despite the fact that they immediately butt heads, they join forces to make a quick escape.

Upon her arrival in Chicago, Beatrix is surprised to discover her supposedly querulous Aunt Gladys shares her own suffragette passions. Encouraged by Gladys to leave her sheltered world, Beatrix begins working as a salesclerk at the Marshall Field and Company department store. When she again encounters Norman on a shopping expedition, he is quickly swept up in the havoc she always seems to attract.

But when another attempt is made to part Norman from his research papers, and it becomes clear Beatrix’s safety is also at risk, they soon discover the curious way feelings can grow between two very different people in the midst of chaos.

My Review:

I always love it when I get a new book by Jen Turano. I know that there’s a fun story ahead!  Her Christian historical novels are always well-researched, and have wonderful characters I think about long after I’ve finished the book.

This book has an entertaining storyline and two loveable characters that kept me laughing all throughout the book.  Miss Beatrix Waterbury is an American heiress whose participation in the suffrage movement has led to her being (accidentally and unintentionally) locked up in jail not just once, but twice.  Her mother ships her off to the home of her eccentric aunt, in the hopes that Beatrix will find a new, and hopefully safer, purpose in life.  As she travels by train from New York to Chicago, she accidentally encounters a train robbery in process.  She’s rescued by Mr. Norman Nesbit, an equally unconventional, socially inept, wealthy, and handsome scientist.  Their escape from the robbers was amusing, especially the scenes with Beatrix and her “pistol purse”.

But Norman is confused by Beatrix’s circumstances.  Beatrix has been assigned by her aunt to work at Marshall Fields and Company as a salesclerk, and Norman is under the impression that she’s poor and needs her job.  As he tries to “help”, things only get worse.  When Norman himself comes into some trouble, it’s Beatrix to the attempted rescue.  This book was exactly what I needed:  A fun story with a heart of faith, hope, and love.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher.  All opinions are my own.
