Review of “Sweeter than Honey: A 365-Day Devotional Journey” by Patsy Burnette

Publisher Description:

  • What if we spend a few quiet moments with God each morning?
  • What if we are intentional about making that happen?
  • What if we commit to doing that for an entire year, and by year’s end we find we’ve read the entire Bible?

My number one tip for successful Bible study is to be intentional about a plan. If you don’t have a plan, it’s probably not going to happen. That’s the reason I wrote Sweeter Than Honey—to give busy women like us a manageable and attainable plan to read through the Bible in a year.Sweeter Than Honey is a 365-day devotional journey centered around Psalm 119:103, “How sweet are Your Words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” It’s a book written to help you find peace in the chaos and strength for your weakest moments as it encourages you in your daily walk with God. These 365 devotions will lead you gently through God’s Word in chronological order of book authorship, and when you read the accompanying passage for each day you will have read through the entire Bible!

You’ll find encouragement on every page of this book—encouragement to seek God above all else. The strong, spiritual emphasis will challenge you to turn to God for daily direction and experience His presence in a whole new and intentional way. Sweeter Than Honey will become more to you than just another daily devotional, it will become a keepsake as you record prayers and participate in thought-provoking, practical exercises that touch every aspect of your life and draw you closer to our Creator.” —from the Prologue

My Review:
If you are looking for an inspiring reading plan to take you through the Bible in a year, please consider this wonderful book. Using a chronological reading plan, this is truly a “devotional journey” through the Bible.  Each day’s plan has a scripture reading assignment and a beautifully-written devotion in which the author directs us to the heart of the passage.  She then gives us principles to apply to our daily walk with God.  As I was reading these devotions, it almost felt as if I were sitting in a small group and discussing the passages with the author.

Here’s an excerpt from the devotion based on Psalm 37:
“ David reminds us to trust in the Lord, do good, dwell where He has placed us, and be faithful. We are to delight ourselves in the Lord, and when we do, our steps will be established. We’re to commit our ways to Him, and be still, waiting patiently for His leading. Though we fall, the Lord will uphold us. He knows our days. He holds our hand and we are not forsaken. His ways we are to keep. Our ways He will establish. He is our stronghold in times of trouble, our deliverer, and our refuge. Remember this today: you are not forsaken. Not in the most difficult seasons or on your hardest days—you are never forsaken, friend!”(Quote from the commentary on May 10, page 162 in the book.)

In the prologue, the author says that “You’ll find encouragement on every page of this book—-encouragement to seek God above all else.”  I’ve found that to be true.  I’m looking forward to my devotional journey through the Bible as I use the reading plan and commentary in this book.
