A Ministry of Letter Writing Restores Hope to the Writer

Doretta Schwartz used to be so happy and passed her positive attitude along to friends in several letters she wrote each month. But that all changed the day she learned of her fiancé’s death and a heavy weight of depression fell upon her. Feeling empty, she puts away her letter writing and won’t even respond to calls from friends. William’s twin brother, Warren, is also grieving his loss, while at the same time, trying to be supportive to his parents and Doretta. Doretta responds to Warren’s friendship, but is he just becoming a replacement for the once-in-a-lifetime love she lost?

My Review:

One of the things that I appreciate about Wanda Brunstetter’s books is that she gives her characters challenging situations, but she also never lets the characters—-of the reader—lose sight of the faith, hope, and love that God extends to us.  Doretta Schwartz, the main character in this story, has always been strong in her faith and an encouragement to her friends and family who have gone through trials.  But when Doretta’s life is suddenly and unexpectedly changed, she finds herself struggling emotionally in a way that she could never have imagined.  The author allows us to walk through the process of Doretta’s grief, and in doing so, also gives us a glimpse of how to show compassion and support someone in our lives who may be struggling, too.  I loved the hope that shines throughout the storyline, and came away thinking that this may now be my favorite book from this author.

I voluntarily received a copy of this book from the publisher.  All opinions on this book are my own.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

New York Times bestselling author Wanda E. Brunstetter’s inspirational romance novels have captured the hearts of millions of readers and based on personal research intended to accurately portray the Amish way of life has made her Amish Country’s Most Beloved Storyteller. Considered one of the founders of the Amish fiction genre, Brunstetter’s fascination with the simple life began when she met her husband, Richard, who grew up in a Mennonite church with close ties to his family’s Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. Meeting her new Mennonite sisters-in-law caused the author to yearn for the simpler life. Brunstetter’s desire to explore the Amish culture increased when she discovered that her great-great grandparents were part of the Anabaptist faith. In their travels, she and her husband have become close friends with many Amish people across America, and many of her books are read and trusted by the Amish, who credit her for giving readers a deeper understanding of the people and their customs. Whenever she visits her Amish friends, Brunstetter finds herself drawn to their peaceful lifestyle, sincerity and close family ties, which is in stark contrast to the chaos and busyness that plagues so many modern “Englishers.” Time and time again, Brunstetter loses her heart in the Amish life, and she hopes her readers will, too. The author of nearly 100 books translated in four languages and with more than 10 million copies sold, Brunstetter’s stories consistently earn spots on bestseller lists including New York Times, Publishers Weekly, USA Today, CBA, ECPA and CBD.
