Review of “A Lancaster Family Christmas” by Kate Lloyd

PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION

What starts as a getaway to Amish Country could turn into the Christmas that changes Diana’s life forever, if only she opens her heart.

Diana can’t face another lonely Christmas in her Manhattan apartment. When a coworker invites her on a last-minute trip to visit her Mennonite family in Lancaster County, Diana jumps at the chance.

Arriving in Amish Country in the middle of a snowstorm, Diana discovers a world that couldn’t be more different from her life on the Upper East Side. She is fascinated by the sprawling farms and buggies on the roads, but what she really notices are the welcoming families, cozy kitchens filled with home-cooked meals…and the two handsome men who may or may not be vying for her attention.

But every community has its secrets. Jesse, the rakish young Amish farmer, is hiding more than just a forbidden cell phone. And then there’s handsome Brett, the guarded Mennonite craftsman who harbors a dark secret of his own.

My Review:

Kate Lloyd is a wonderful storyteller.  Once you read this book, you’ll want to spend the Christmas holidays with Sam and Marion Yoder; and the descriptions of Marion’s pies will have you thinking about doing your Christmas baking in October.

This book has an interesting storyline:  Diana is a young woman who has lived in New York City her whole life.  Diana and her parents currently live in an expensive apartment on Central Park East.  She’s lived a life of wealth and privilege, yet she’s a down-to-earth, compassionate young woman who is also searching for something more.  Her parents are divorcing and Diana finds herself alone in the apartment most of the time.  She’s also about to lose her job, so when her best friend, Betsy Yoder, invites Diana to go home to Lancaster county to visit Betsy’s Mennonite parents, Diana decides to join her.

Diana discovers that even though life is much different in Lancaster County, it’s somehow exactly what her heart has been searching for.  It also doesn’t hurt that Betsy has a brother, Brett, that’s single, handsome, and thoughtful—or that Brett has an Amish best friend, Jeff, who is also handsome, but has just broken his engagement and doesn’t always use the best judgment.

There’s some merry mix-ups in this story, especially when Brett and Jeff decide to visit Betsy and Diana in the city.  I loved the way the Mennonite, Amish, and English cultures all came together in this book and showed us that even though we may live different lifestyles, the issues of the heart are the same.  I loved this book, and it’s now on my shelf of Christmas books to read every year.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher.  All opinions are my own.
